Crowns

A crown (or sometimes referred to as a “cap”) is commonly placed for many reasons. It can be to repair a fractured tooth, protect a tooth with a large filling from fracture, or return a badly worn tooth to proper shape, size, and function. A crown is commonly made from gold, porcelain, or a combination of the two. The type of material that is used is based on many factors and is determined on a case-by-case basis. Today, there are many materials that can be used for crowns that are both durable and mimic natural tooth structure.

Bridges

If you're missing one or more teeth, you may notice a difference in chewing and speaking. There are options to help restore your smile.Bridges help maintain the shape of your face, as well as alleviating the stress in your bite by replacing missing teeth.

Sometimes called a fixed partial denture, a bridge replaces missing teeth with artificial teeth, looks great, and literally bridges the gap where one or more teeth may have been. The restoration can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain or a combination of these materials and is bonded onto surrounding teeth for support.Unlike a removable bridge, which you can take out and clean, a fixed bridge can only be removed by a dentist.

Implants

Crowns and conventional bridges or dentures may not be your only options when replacing missing teeth. For some people, dental implants offer a smile that looks and feels very natural. Surgically placed below the gums over a series of appointments, implants fuse to the jawbone and serve as a base for individual replacement teeth, bridges or a denture.

Implants offer stability because they fuse to your bone. Integration of the implants into your jaw also helps your replacement teeth feel more natural and some people also find the secure fit more comfortable than conventional substitutes.Candidates for dental implants need to have healthy gums and adequate bone to support the implant. A thorough evaluation by your dentist will help determine whether you are a good candidate for dental implants.

Restorative Dentistry

Dr. Davis provides general restorative dentistry to remove decay and old failing restorations. Typically, this will involve cleaning all the affected tooth structure out then rebuilding the tooth with either a silver or white filling. The traditionally placed silver fillings are still utilized today due to their durability, simplicity to place, and lower cost. However, more and more, we are utilizing white composite filling materials. This is due to many factors, including esthetics, ability to conserve more natural tooth structure, and patient desires not to have silver amalgam fillings.

Removable Prosthetics

If a patient is missing multiple teeth, or is not a candidate for implants or fixed bridges, Dr. Davis may fabricate a removable partial denture. This is a prosthesis made of alloy and acrylic that replaces the missing teeth. It can be removed by the patient for oral hygiene, and is generally more cost effective than implants or fixed bridges. Dr. Davis provides complete denture and partial denture services, including repair of most types of denture and partials.

Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissues that support your teeth. Your gum tissue is not attached to the teeth as high as it may seem. There is a very shallow v-shaped crevice called a sulcus between the tooth and gums. Periodontal diseases attack just below the gum line in the sulcus, where they cause the attachment of the tooth and its supporting tissues to break down. As the tissues are damaged, the sulcus develops into a pocket: generally, the more severe the disease, the greater the depth of the pocket.

Periodontal diseases are classified according to the severity of the disease. The two major stages are gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is a milder and reversible form of periodontal disease that only affects the gums. Gingivitis may lead to more serious, destructive forms of periodontal disease called periodontitis.

There are many different treatment modalities to address periodontal disease. After an initial assessment, Dr. Davis and his staff will provide a treatment plan to improve condition of the gums and underlying bone. This may include a procedure called scaling and root planing, which is a cleaning that reaches deep below the gumline. Occasionally, Dr. Davis may refer a patient with more severe periodontal disease to a specialist called a periodontist for evaluation and treatment.

Endodontic Therapy

Inside each tooth is the dental pulp which provides nutrients and nerves to the tooth, it runs like a thread down through the root. When the pulp is diseased or injured, the pulp tissue dies. This can happen from decay, trauma, fracture, or failing restorative treatment. If you don't remove the diseased pulp, your tooth can get infected and you could lose it. After the dentist removes the pulp, the root canal is cleaned and sealed off to protect it. Then your dentist places a crown over the tooth to help make it stronger.

Most of the time, a root canal is a relatively simple procedure with little or no discomfort involving one to three visits. Best of all, it can save your tooth and your smile! Dr. Davis provides root canal therapy in his office. HoweverThere are specialists that treat root canals using advanced techniques that Dr. Davis will rely on to treat most molars and complicated cases.
